Sure, Michelle Obama’s sleeveless dresses have caused a stir, but are Washingtonians really that concerned about having nice arms?
“Yes,” fitness expert and D.C. local Denise Austin told Yeas & Nays. “People have come up to me and said, ‘Denise, how am I going to firm up the back of my arms?’”
In trying to achieve slender and toned arms, the biggest issue, Austin explained, is that the tricep is one of the most underused muscles of the body.
“You don’t use it when you pick up kids or groceries,” she said. “So when people see such beautiful arms, they know they’ve been exercising.”
Austin spent Tuesday night at the National Press Club promoting her new book “Denise’s Daily Dozen: The Easy, Every day Program to Lose Up to 12 Pounds in 2 Weeks” and showed Yeas & Nays a few simple exercises to get great guns.
Our favorites: A push-up you can do standing up, replacing the wall with the floor. Also, an arm workout that can be done right from your chair, by scooting your butt off the end of the chair and lifting and lowering your body. “I tell people you could do this while watching your favorite TV show, anytime, anywhere, off the couch, off the chair at work and you target tone your arms,” she gushed.
Austin gave props to the president and first lady for their commitment to fitness in a city with a reputation for being overstressed and undertoned, and gave Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., a shout out too.
“She really takes fitness to heart,” Austin said.
But when asked which politicos could use a little work, Austin demurred.
“I’m a more positive person,” she said.
