1. All-Over Toning
Since dance uses a myriad of muscle groups, you can expect your body to get toned in ways that might surprise you. Leg muscles are generally the first to show changes, as they are the group taking the brunt of new usage. You may also find your arms, glutes (rear end), and abdominals firming up as well. Don't be surprised if your neck and back muscles are in need of some TLC in the beginning. Take care and realize how much your body is benefiting from all of this healthy movement.
2. Improved Posture and Balance
As your back, neck and abdominal muscles strengthen, you can expect your posture to improve. You might suddenly find yourself standing up taller, sitting straighter, and even breathing easier. Your rib cage may become more expanded and your tail bone better in line with your spine (rather than curling under or swooping outward). All of these things, paired with stronger leg muscles, help to improve balance. Remember, with a healthy new posture comes greater confidence and agility.
3. Increase in Stamina and Flexibility
As you progress through your dance experience, your body begins to respond to the changes you are asking of it, including how to better expend energy and how to make the best use of muscles and joints. Soon you will find yourself able to exercise for longer periods without feelings of exhaustion. You may also find yourself able to lift heavier objects, hold your breath longer and bend at the waist with greater ease.
4. Decrease in Stress and Tension
Dance is essentially a magic bullet for redirecting focus. If you are concerned over a work project, the health of a loved one or your mile-long To-Do List, for the short while you are dancing, your worries seem to go on hiatus. You might even find yourself better able to deal with your concerns courtesy of your new aptitude for focusing on tasks at hand. The social benefits of dance also have a hand in decreasing stress, as friendships and supportive group settings foster relaxation and confidence.
. Determent of Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Heart Disease, Osteoporosis & More
A healthy body is a temple. When you care for your temple, it can be hard for intruders such as medical ailments to penetrate it. Exercise has been shown to help control diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. Stronger bones, which are another benefit of dance, can help ward off osteoporosis. Even colds and influenza have a harder time attacking a body that is strong and efficient.
